Job Title: Vice President of Research & Development
Reports To: CEO
FLSA Status: Exempt
Department: R&D


Summary: Responsible for technology assessment and choice for implementation of
approved projects. Leadership of team that develops design and supports improvements
to the OptiScanner system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides the scientific/technical leadership to move products from discovery/identification through commercialization
  • Guides the technical design of new products and ensure that they meet all critical marketing and technical specifications
  • Drives the development process including being instrumental in validation and design control through to product launch
  • Builds, develops and manages R&D team to execute on R&D strategies
  • Budget and planning responsibility to achieve agreed-upon milestones

Knowledge, Skill and Competency Requirements:

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and competencies:

  • Experience with strategic short and long term planning and execution
  • Ability to integrate multiple engineering disciplines (software, electrical, fluidics, mechanical, materials, optics) into a cohesive product development strategy and execution
  • Ability to identify key technical areas for improvement, balancing in house and external technical expertise, setting priorities
  • Strong technical communications skills for interaction with non technical internal colleagues, internal/external investors or customers
  • Scientific and engineering knowledge of IVD technology
  • Ability to baseline developed product against industry standards for measurement of product performance levels
  • Strong organizational skills to be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Expertise in US and OUS quality systems and requirements
  • Skilled at analyzing data and summarizing results
  • Exhibit excellent leadership qualities, including team building and development
  • Ability to foster collaborative relationships across the organization and with OptiScan partners and customers
  • Advanced computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s and Masters or Ph.D. degree in a Scientific or Engineering field
  • Minimum 15 years progressively more responsible experience in R&D in a medical device company

Managerial Responsibilities:
Managerial responsibility for all R&D personnel

Required Training:

The area supervisor or department head (or delegate) shall determine what internal training (if any) is required in order to satisfactorily meet the job requirements listed above. Such training shall be conducted in accordance with applicable SOPs and said training shall be documented in accordance to our internal training procedure. The employee shall also receive general training in both 21CFR 820 and EN13485 as well as the OptiScan Quality Manual and Quality Policy.
